Linux can affect with Virus / Malware. Why linux is not popular ?

Linux can get affected with virus / malware (Refer) - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux_malware

Linux And Virus : http://www.linuxclues.com/articles/21.htm

Mac also can affect with virus : http://www.howtogeek.com/76628/online-safety-who-says-macs-dont-get-viruses/

Having said the chances for getting virus affected on linux is very less.
1) Because, people target windows to get affect virus due to huge user group using windows.
2) File installation in windows is extension .exe. (So, when user browsing some sites .exe file will download and user may client and without permission software may get installed with virus). Rather in linux most of the files were (rpm, dpkg). User needs to download them give full permission  and execute from the terminal.
3) Linux having good security architecture.
4) Most of the linux users will create user and work on specific user rather working in root. So, the permission will be less
5) Linux can get virus if you use wine (wine is the software linux users used to install windows apps in linux)

Why Linux is not popular

1) Because its free. Free means people think they won't get all feature will work as expected.
2) Support is very less. Microsoft having millions of dollars in support for windows. Linux doesn't have invested people rather they have good community to share ideas.
3) Too many distribution in linux (Ex : Ubuntu supports User Friendly to reach huge audience. Fedora is majorly focus on Enterprise users to bring them into usage). So, people distracted.
4) Linux people should know what they doing. Basic understanding about system knowledge is important. Rather any dummies can use windows. Or dummies will use windows because they are lazy to explore.
5) Installation is little tricky. You need to know how to execute the command in Terminal and giving permission etc.. Rather in windows you can double click and install easily.
6) Linux is not as user Friendly as windows
7) Any tools / software in the market build by companies they will support windows first due to huge user group. Linux is an extra step they need to take to support. (Like having rpms, dpkg ...)
